WINNIPEG, MB - Neighbourhoods across Winnipeg have been revitalized and enhanced with upgrades and improvements to community recreational facilities through Phase One of the Building Communities Initiative II (BCI II).
Since 2010, the Manitoba Government and the City of Winnipeg have committed $10 Million in BCI funds to 38 approved neighbourhood infrastructure projects throughout Winnipeg. Work on 32 of the projects has been completed and work on the remaining six is underway for completion in 2013.
“Many older Winnipeg neighbourhoods have been significantly enhanced and re-energized because of these BCI projects over the past two years,” said local Government Minister Ron Lemieux. “My government is pleased to continue to partner with the City of Winnipeg on initiatives that so clearly strengthen communities and benefit local residents and businesses.”
“Enhancing these recreational facilities throughout our City is another example of government working together to provide Winnipeggers more venues for active living and enjoying the outdoors," said Mayor Sam Katz. "These upgrades will provide safe, welcoming environments for residents to enjoy for many years to come.”
The Building Communities Initiative (BCI) II is a multi-year, cost-shared capital initiative developed jointly by the Province of Manitoba and the City of Winnipeg. The goal of BCI is to support community revitalization through improvements to local community infrastructure in targeted older neighbourhoods and contribute to the vitality, safety and health of communities throughout the city.

Park Infrastructure Renewal:
- Peri Green Park - play structure, pathway, site works
- Fort Rouge Park - pathways, lighting, drainage improvements, site furnishings
- Joe Malone Park - play structure, pathways, parking lot, tennis courts, landscaping
- Winakwa Community Centre - play structure, site works
- Frontenac Park - play structure, site works
- Ecole St. Avila School/Richmond Kings Community Centre - play structure, water conservation demonstration project
- Dalhousie Forest Park - play structure, pathways, drainage improvements
- Ducharme Park - play structure, site works
- Tanner Tot Lot - play structure, site works
- Weinberg Tot Lot - play structure,site works
- Newton Tot Lot - play structure, site works
- Sir John Franklin Community Centre - play structure, tennis courts
- Dorge Park - lighting
- Weston Memorial Community Centre - parking lot, hockey pen
- Garden City Collegiate - tennis and basketball courts
- Maples Community Centre - new basketball and tennis court development
- Elwick Park/Recreation Site - new basketball court, site paving, drainage
