Controlled burns in natural areas

Released: September 28, 2012 at 11:34 p.m.

WINNIPEG, MB - September 28, 2012 - The City of Winnipeg Public Works Department will be conducting controlled burns in various natural areas such as tall grass prairie remnants and prairie restorations, between Friday, September 28 and November 1, weather conditions permitting. Controlled burns will be conducted in minimal wind conditions with appropriate fire guards in place.

Fire plays an important role in the preservation and restoration of prairies. Lack of fire allows weeds to invade these endangered plant communities. Controlled burns have been safely conducted by the Naturalist Services Branch on Winnipeg's tall grass prairies since 1986.
