Winnipeggers invited to show support Wednesday

Colleen FurlanWINNIPEG, MB - September 25, 2012 - Winnipeg's own Colleen Furlan is in the running to become the next Dorothy in the Canadian production of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Wizard of Oz, and Mayor Sam Katz joins other Winnipeggers in cheering her on.

"It's exciting to see Colleen compete on national television for such a coveted prize," said Mayor Katz. "Although she's only 19, Colleen is already a veteran in Winnipeg's musical theatre community."

Winnipeggers who want to support Colleen can head out to a rally at the University of Manitoba's Great Hall at University College Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. Supporters of the "Red Dorothy," as Colleen is known, are encouraged to wear red and cheer for Colleen in a televised production for broadcast this Sunday on CBC's Over the Rainbow.

Eight contestants remain in the competition. Each is vying to become the next Dorothy in the Toronto-based production.

CBC's Over the Rainbow is broadcast on Sunday and Monday nights. Each week, Canadians vote for their favourite Dorothy. Contestants with the least votes compete in a sing-off and each week one contestant goes home. Winnipeggers can vote for Colleen at www.cbc.ca/overtherainbow. Voting instructions are found online.

"I know Colleen feels the support of Winnipeggers behind her," said Mayor Katz. "We're proud of her accomplishments and wish her all the best in the competition!"
