Released: September 21, 2012 at 3:20 p.m.

WINNIPEG, MB - September 21, 2012 - The Winnipeg Public Library has launched a mobile app for smartphones and tablets, allowing you to take the library with you anytime, anywhere. The free WPL to Go app is compatible with iPhone/iPad, Android, BlackBerry and Windows Phone and can be downloaded simply by visiting the library's website at Winnipeg.ca/library.

Apple and Android users can also search their device's marketplace for "Winnipeg Public Library" to get a direct download.

The app makes it easier than ever to access your library account on the go. The app allows you to:

  • Search the library catalogue to find books, music, movies and more;
  • Check your library account, renew materials, and place new requests;
  • Find out if an item is waiting for you on hold;
  • Get one-touch access to free eLibraries Manitoba eBook and audiobook downloads;
  • Map the location of any branch and get directions, hours and contact information;
  • Access the Library's Twitter, Facebook and other social media accounts; and
  • Scan the publisher's barcode of any book, anywhere, to check for availability at your local library.

A demonstration of the app is available at wpl.winnipeg.ca/library/wpltogo.asp to preview its many features.
