Report calls for extended contractor work hours and lane openings during peak periods, improved notifications to keep Winnipeggers moving

WINNIPEG, MB - September 7, 2012 - Winnipeg motorists may soon see reduced impacts to traffic during construction on regional streets due to recommendations being proposed by the Public Service.

The recommendations in the Establishment of Construction Criteria for Minor Repairs on Regional Streets Report are designed to minimize the impacts experienced by motorists when contractors undertake minor repairs and utility cuts for private customers on regional streets.

When deemed necessary by the City of Winnipeg to help expedite the repairs;

  • Contractors will be required to work weekends and/or 24 hours to complete their work.
  • Where the physical conditions of a site permit the use of steel plating, the City will require contractors to install steel plating over excavations to allow the opening of traffic lanes during rush hour periods.
  • The City is continuing to work with its stakeholders to develop improved communication in an effort to better manage lane closures and shorten the amount of time regional streets are closed for minor repairs.

The complete report is available at: winnipeg.ca/CLKDMIS/ViewDoc.asp?DocId=12087&SectionId=&InitUrl=

The report will be considered by the Standing Policy Committee of Infrastructure Renewal and Public Works on Tuesday, September 11, 2012.

In 2012, City Council is investing $149.8 million on roads and bridges, in keeping with citizens' priorities.
