WINNIPEG, MB - August 21, 2012 - Mayor Sam Katz is calling upon Winnipeggers to get behind a local soccer team in its quest to be named the BMO Team of the Week 2012 Champions.

“The enthusiasm and dedication shown by the young players, their parents and their coaches is inspiring,” said Mayor Sam Katz. “I wish them well and urge all Winnipeggers to take a moment to support this team in this friendly competition.”

The Valley Garden Rockets U9 girls’ team, playing out of Winnipeg’s Valley Gardens Community Centre, is one of 15 BMO Team of the Week finalists and is currently ranked number two in the cross-Canada competition. An extra push from Winnipeggers could vault the Rockets into first place.

The team is competing to receive the grand prize, consisting of $125,000 to put towards refurbishing a soccer field, a team trip to a major Canadian soccer match, as well as a $5,000 donation to KidSport Manitoba.

The online voting period ends on Aug. 27, 2012 at 11:59 p.m. ET. Winnipeggers who want to cheer on the team with a vote can go to www.BMOsoccer.com.
