Motorists to drive over the new Disraeli Bridge for the first time

Released: July 24, 2012 at 2:07 p.m.

WINNIPEG, MB - July 24, 2012 - Beginning tomorrow, Winnipeg drivers will get their first chance to drive on the new Disraeli Bridge. The new bridge is opening to southbound traffic starting Wednesday morning, after rush hour.

This will be the first time traffic will travel on the new Disraeli Bridge. Southbound vehicles will travel on the new bridge before continuing onto the existing Disraeli Overpass.

"The opening of the new bridge brings us one step closer to completion of this much anticipated, multi-year project," said Mayor Sam Katz. "With this P3 project coming in on budget and on time, Winnipeggers are getting new infrastructure and extremely good value for their money."

Northbound lanes of the new Disraeli Overpass opened last month. Construction will continue through the summer and fall with all the lanes of the Disraeli Overpass and Disraeli Bridge slated to open in October 2012.

The project is running on time and on its budget of $195 million. The Disraeli Bridges Project is a public-private partnership known as a P3.

The new Disraeli Bridges will replace the 50-year-old structures that span the Red River and the CP Rail mainline, and will rejuvenate a critical piece of Winnipeg's transportation infrastructure.
