With the early arrival of mild spring temperatures, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service is reminding residents to practice Arson CPR as a way to protect themselves from the dangers of arson and fire setting and to keep our city safe.

WINNIPEG - March 16, 2012 - With the early arrival of mild spring temperatures, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service is reminding residents to practice Arson CPR as a way to protect themselves from the dangers of arson and fire setting and to keep our city safe.

Community Action
Join or start a Neighbourhood Watch Program in your neighbourhood by contacting the Winnipeg Police Service Crime Prevention Unit at 204-986-6322.

If you see any suspicious activity in your neighbourhood, call the police. Be cautious of people carrying containers and strangers loitering in the area. If they are in cars, note their license plate numbers.

Prevention
Here are some practical steps you can take to reduce the risk of an attack on your property:

  • Use motion-activated lights to brighten the outside of your home or garage.
  • Keep shrubs and trees near buildings trimmed. They can be a source of fuel and a hiding spot.
  • Store flammable material safely.
  • Garbage, leaves, lumber and bulky waste (such as mattresses or couches) should be disposed of properly. Firewood should be kept well away from your house or garage.
  • Keep doors and windows secured. Don't use double-keyed locks or bars on bedroom windows that could trap a person during a fire.
  • Keep locks, hinges, frames, doors and windows in good repair. Check skylights, roof hatches, fences and gates regularly to ensure they are secured.
  • Be alert to any smoke or unusual odours.
  • Smoke alarms won't stop an arson fire, but they can save your life. Make sure your alarms are working and change the batteries every year. Test your alarms monthly.
  • Develop and practice a home escape plan and review it with your family.

Reporting
In Winnipeg, call 911 to report a fire. Outside Winnipeg, call 911 or call your local police, RCMP or fire department.

To report accumulations of bulky waste on curbs or in back lanes, contact 311.

The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service has stepped up inspections on rooming houses and public buildings and is participating in prevention workshops and active patrols in the community.
