Snow Route SignWINNIPEG - November 28, 2008 – The City’s annual Snow Route Overnight Parking Ban will take effect at 2:00 a.m., Monday, December 1, 2008. The public is reminded that if they have been parking a vehicle on a street that is designated as a Snow Route, that vehicle must be moved by 2:00 a.m. Monday morning.

The annual ban, which will remain in effect until March 1, 2009, prohibits parking between 2:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. on all streets designated as Snow Routes. Snow Routes receive priority status for snow clearing operations and are identified by ‘Snow Route’ signs.

“It’s very important we have the ability to control ice and clear snow on these important routes, unimpeded by parked cars,” said Bill Larkin, Director of Public Works. “Well-cleared roads allow proper traffic flow and ensure emergency vehicles can travel the city quickly and safely.”

Residential streets, though not generally affected, could be subject to the ban if they are designated as Snow Routes. Larkin advises residents to check their street for Snow Route signs, or if unsure to call the Public Works Department’s Customer Service Line at 311.

Up to date parking ban information is available on the Public Works parking bans webpage or by calling the Snow Information line at 775-SNOW (7669). In addition, the public is encouraged to subscribe online to the free email notification system that advises subscribers when a parking ban goes into effect at:  http://winnipeg.ca/wpgmail/PW/pw_cs_subscribe.stm

Violators of the Snow Route Overnight Parking Ban may be ticketed. For more information about traffic tickets go to the Winnipeg Parking Authority at: http://theparkingstore.winnipeg.ca/theparkingstore/

This parking ban is put into effect pursuant to the terms of By-Law No. 6288/93 which provides for the automatic implementation of the Snow Route Parking Ban annually from December 1 to March 1 on all streets designated as Snow Routes.
