WINNIPEG – June 13, 2008 – With one week remaining until Bike to Work Day, Bike to the Future, Climate Change Connection, Manitoba Cycling Association, Resource Conservation Manitoba, and Winnipeg Trails Association today hosted a Launch Rally at City Hall to help participants gear up for Bike to Work Day taking place on Friday, June 20th.
“Bike to Work Day is a great initiative that will make a positive impact on cycling in Winnipeg,” said Mayor Sam Katz. “I am proud that the City of Winnipeg is expanding our active transportation network, and I look forward to the opportunity to get to work on more alternative transportation options for Winnipeggers.”
Bike to Work organizers also reminded participants about the complimentary breakfast at The Forks, courtesy of Manitoba Lotteries Corporation, beginning at 7am for the first 300 registered cyclists. Participants will be able to leave their bikes at the free bike valet parking to refuel on pancakes and enjoy the sounds of the Patrick Alexandre Band and the Garfield Street String Band. Registered participants are also eligible to win great prizes, including a Dutch Commuter Bike, an electric bike from Organza, and a 1-year membership to GoodLife Fitness.
"Manitoba Lotteries Corporation is pleased to be a part of Winnipeg’s first annual Bike to Work Day," said Winston Hodgins, President and CEO of Manitoba Lotteries. "Participation will continue to grow each year as events like this raise the awareness of a healthy alternative to traffic congestion and promotes bicycling as a fun and viable form of transportation. We hope that people will continue to choose the bicycle over the vehicle."
Bike to Work Day is an active and energetic opportunity to highlight the environmental, health, and economic benefits of cycling by encouraging Winnipeggers to cycle to work or school.
Individuals who have not yet registerd to join in the fun and cycle to work on Friday, June 20th can do so at www.biketoworkdaywinnipeg.org.
