WINNIPEG – June 11, 2008 – The City of Winnipeg is in the process of applying shared-use lane markings or sharrows, on select city streets. Motorists will notice new symbols painted on the pavement and street signage designating shared-use lanes which are intended to encourage motorists and cyclists to share a widened curb lane.
The City’s sharrow program includes the application of the sharrow pavement markings and installation of “Share the Road” signage. Over the past month, the lane markings have been applied and signage installed on key routes, including sections of Higgins Avenue, Dakota Street and Dunkirk Drive. In the coming weeks, Roblin Boulevard, Grant Avenue, Regent Avenue, and Plessis Road will be marked and signage will be installed.
“This concept is new to Winnipeg and is a key component of the City’s Active Transportation Action Plan,” says Kevin Nixon, Active Transportation Coordinator for the City of Winnipeg.
In keeping with the requirements of the Highway Traffic Act, cyclists and motorists have a responsibility to share the roadway. To promote safety, cyclists and motorists must maintain an awareness of each other and use appropriate caution when passing each other.
Over the summer months, the City of Winnipeg will mark a total of 35 kilometres of sharrows at a cost of approximately $50,000.
