Orphaned monkey accepts new zookeeper mom
Released: 12:15 p.m.

NEWS @ A GLANCE:

Zookeeper Jacquie Randall is providing around the clock mothering for a tiny Squirrel Monkey whose mother died recently from an infection. Randall notes that caring for a monkey is almost as much work as a human child. (for more details, please read the full media release below)

WINNIPEG - February 14, 2008 - Zookeeper Jacquie Randall is providing around the clock mothering for a tiny Squirrel Monkey whose mother died recently from an infection. Randall has often been called upon to care for abandoned or orphaned young at the Zoo, but this little charmer, named CJ, has to be one of the cutest.

When surrogate-mother Randall is attending to other duties in the Zoo Hospital, CJ clings to his Teddy Bear, wrapping all four gangly legs and long tail around the stuffed toy. Randall says it’s fascinating to observe the behavioural similarities of this South American primate with a human child. As part of the procedure to introduce CJ back into the monkey colony, he is studying family videos, and chirps back and forth with his siblings on day visits. If all goes well, CJ will be integrated back into the group by spring, where he will complete his education (of becoming a monkey).

CJ is now old enough to begin nibbling on solid foods like banana, but like most kids, he is terrified of broccoli. He is becoming more independent every day and has mastered the fine art of climbing to the top of his cage; getting down is another lesson. Randall notes that caring for a monkey is almost as much work as a human child.
