MEDIA RELEASE:

WINNIPEG September 30, 2006 - Today, His Worship Mayor Sam Katz, together with the Honourable David Chomiak, Minister of Justice and Attorney General, Joy Smith, Member of Parliament for Kildonan-St. Paul, and Mr. Scott Brooks, Chairman of the Red River Community Centre Building officially opened the New Red River Community Centre.

“Community centres are the heart of our city and provide positive alternatives to our youth,” said Mayor Katz. “I am encouraged by all levels of government working together to address our recreational facilities and build a top-notch facility to meet the needs of our citizens.”

The new Red River Community Center is a $2.1 million project funded jointly through the Canada-Manitoba Infrastructure Programs in partnership with Red River Community Centre supported by the General Council of Winnipeg Community Centres, the community and local business.

“This state of the art recreation facility is setting a new standard for community facilities right here in this North Winnipeg community,” said Minister Chomiak. “We are pleased to partner with the other levels of government to make it a reality.”

“Canada’s New Government believes that investing in our communities today is an investment in our future,” said Joy Smith. “This Centre will help bring our families together to learn and play.”

“I’m extremely proud of the Red River Community Centre Building Committee and Elected Executive. The financial support from the community, local businesses and governments has been outstanding.” said Mr. Brooks. “We’re a very strong and giving community, which this building represents. Today is a celebration of the support that allowed us to open the doors and welcome the community inside!”

The new 11,270 square foot facility was designed by Prairie Architects Inc. with input from the community, City staff and Community Centre representatives through a “collective” design process. Designed to meet the community needs, as well as be low maintenance and vandal resistant, the new facility incorporates many Universal Design features within its four walls making it one of the most accessible, barrier-free community centres in the City.
