WINNIPEG - November 4, 2005 - Following through on his commitment to slash red tape and improve customer service for the citizens of Winnipeg, Mayor Sam Katz is taking the first step toward the creation of a 311 system, a key recommendation of his Red Tape Commission, at next week’s meeting of Executive Policy Committee (EPC).

“The Red Tape Commission was all about improving service and cutting red tape for our citizens. A 311 system will be a huge step in that direction,” said Katz. “311 provides the best possible service to taxpayers – period. Why bog people down with over 500 different phone numbers when one will do?”

Katz has already had an opportunity to observe 311 systems first-hand in Chicago, Illinois and Gatineau, Quebec. The administrative report recommending the adoption of the 311 model for Winnipeg has been prepared and will go forward to the Executive Policy Committee meeting on November 9th. If adopted, the report will approve $250,000 be spent to develop a plan for a system that best meets the needs of Winnipeggers.

“I am very excited to see such an important recommendation from the Commission move forward,” said Councillor Franco Magnifico (St. Boniface), who chaired the Red Tape Commission. “Many different cities have developed a 311 system already, so we will able to benefit from their experience, and develop a plan that is tailor-made for the needs of Winnipeggers.”

If the report is endorsed, it will proceed to City Council for consideration at the next regular meeting of City Council on November 23rd.
