WINNIPEG - October 11, 2005 - Today, Councillor Mike O’Shaughnessy, together with the Honourable Scott Smith, Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs and Trade and the Honourable Raymond Simard, Member of Parliament for St. Boniface, on behalf of the Honourable Stephen Owen, Minister of Western Economic Diversification and Minister of State (Sport), and Mr. Scott Brooks, Chairman of the Red River Community Centre Building Committee participated in a “Raising the Roof ”event to recognize the construction and re-development of the new Red River Community Centre at 203 Murray Ave. at Main Street .
“This community-driven facility will provide a much-needed recreational resource for the residents of my area” said Councillor O’Shaughnessy. “I sincerely congratulate all the residents who have worked so diligently in bringing this project to fruition.”
“The province is pleased to support this new community facility,” said Scott Smith, Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs and Trade. “Residents from all age groups will enjoy new opportunities for social interaction and recreation, important components of healthy living.”
“The Red River Community Centre is a great example of the Government of Canada’s New Deal for Cities at work,” said Simard, “Our goal is to strengthen cities and communities across Canada by making investments in community infrastructure that improve our quality of life.”
Scott Brooks, Chairman of the Red River Community Centre Building Committee said that “the community support for building the new Red River Community Centre has been simply amazing. We look forward to the day when we can open the doors and welcome the community inside”.
The firm Regent Construction Inc. has been hired to build the new Red River Community Centre with construction expected to be completed in the Spring of 2006.
The new 11,270 square foot facility designed by Prairie Architects Inc. with input from City staff and Community Centre representatives includes a gymnasium/hall, multi-purpose room, office, kitchen, canteen/bar, six dressing rooms, viewing/skate change rooms, lobby, garage and storage rooms.
The new Red River Community Center is a $2.1 million project funded jointly through the Canada-Manitoba Infrastructure program in partnership with Red River Community Centre supported by the General Council of Winnipeg Community Centres, the community and local business.
The Canada-Manitoba Infrastructure Program (CMIP) has invested over $180 million into Manitoba's urban, rural and northern municipal infrastructure over a six-year period that began in October 2000. The $180 million program consists of matching one-third federal, provincial and local government contributions.
