Mayor Katz welcomes Rapid Transit Report
Plan for basic upgrades to key routes welcomed
WINNIPEG - SEPTEMBER 30, 2005 - Following through on his commitment to developing a made-in-Winnipeg plan to develop Rapid Transit, Mayor Sam Katz and Councillor Russ Wyatt presented the Rapid Transit final report of the Mayor's Rapid Transit Task Force, which calls for the enhancement of existing transit services in addition to the construction of new busways.
“Our buses can move more efficiently with some basic improvements,” said Katz. “The Rapid Transit report lays out concrete steps we can take to improve our service while ensuring our overall capital spending priorities are attuned to the needs of Winnipeggers. I want to thank Councillor Wyatt for bringing ‘common sense’ together with Rapid Transit at last.”
The Rapid Transit report calls for the development of “Quality Corridors” along strategic routes. These Quality Corridors will include new diamond lanes, transit priority signals and improved shelters among other improvements. These service enhancements will increase ridership and build critical mass for the construction of busways to the south and east of the city. Total costs for the improvements in the report are estimated by Rapid Transit Task Force members to be $270 million.
“I want to thank Mayor Katz for the opportunity to present a realistic approach to Rapid Transit,” said Councillor Wyatt (Transcona). “Winnipeg has an amazing transit system that can be even better. And I look forward to seeing our recommendations move ahead to bring a Made-in-Winnipeg solution to Rapid Transit.”
The recommendations from the Rapid Transit Task Force Report will be considered by City Council over the month of October, and ultimately determined at the monthly meeting of Council on October 26th.
