West Nile Virus mosquito fogging continues under provincial order
WINNIPEG - JULY 19, 2005, 10:30 a.m. - Tonight, weather permitting, the City of Winnipeg will continue its city-wide West Nile Virus Fogging Program, as required by the Province of Manitoba’s Public Health Order. The issuance of this city-wide Public Health Order means that buffer zones are no longer in effect.
Starting at 10:00 p.m. tonight, weather permitting, the Insect Control Branch will be fogging in the following neighborhoods: St. James, Silver Heights, Deer Lodge, Sargent Park, Wolseley, West Broadway, Downtown, Centennial, and South Point Douglas. The boundaries for the areas as follows:
Starting at Summit Road at the north City limits, moving east along Four Mile Road to the CPR Glenboro Line, going south along the CPR Glenboro Line to the north City limits, east along the north City limits to Notre Dame Avenue, continuing east on Notre Dame Avenue to Fort Street, south on Fort Street to Portage Avenue, east on Portage Avenue to Main Street, north on Main Street to Higgins Avenue, east on Higgins Avenue to the Red River, moving south along the Red River to the Assiniboine River (The Forks), moving west along the Assiniboine River to Mount Royal Crescent, north on Mount Royal Crescent to Portage Avenue, west on Portage Avenue to Sturgeon Creek, north along Sturgeon Creek to Saskatchewan Avenue, east on Saskatchewan Avenue to Summit Road, north on Summit Road to the north City limits.
Until further notice, fogging will continue on a daily basis between the hours of 10:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. Fogging will not occur if there is a significant rainfall, if wind speeds are greater than 15 km/h or temperatures are below 13º Celsius.
The insecticide Malathion for ultra low volume (ULV) applications will be used. This insecticide has been approved for use in Canada by Health Canada (PMRA – Pest Management Regulatory Agency). Malathion will be used in accordance with federally-approved label directions by licensed pesticide applicators.
Every day, the City will issue a Public Service Announcement, providing a minimum of eight (8) hours advanced notification, to advise citizens as to where fogging operations will specifically be occurring on that given night, weather permitting.
To find out where City crews will be fogging, citizens are encouraged to visit the Web site at winnipeg.ca/bugline or call the Bugline at 311 daily. The Insect Control Branch has implemented automated email and telephone notification systems. Once registered, residents will receive daily phone or email notification during any and all fogging for adult mosquito control. To register for the automated email notification system, citizens can go to winnipeg.ca/wpgmail. To register for the automated telephone notification system, citizens can call the Bugline at 311.
The City’s extensive larviciding and barrier treatment programs will continue throughout the City in conjunction with the fogging program.
Citizens are reminded to take personal protection measures by:
- Reducing the time you spend outdoors between dusk and dawn. The peak mosquito hours are around dusk and dawn, but Culex mosquitoes will also bite during the night.
- Wearing light-colored, loose-fitting, long-sleeved tops and long pants when outside, especially between dusk and dawn.
- Applying insect repellent containing DEET, according to Health Canada Guidelines. (DEET is not recommended for children under the age of 6 months).
- Checking that door and window screens fit tightly and are free of holes.
