Update on mosquito control activities
WINNIPEG - JULY 13, 2005, 4:00 p.m.- Today’s surveillance data indicates that the emergence of adult nuisance mosquitoes is occurring at unprecedented levels. Our scientific assumptions could never have predicted the unusual weather conditions and the intensity of this level of emergence.
The Insect Control Branch is dealing with an unusual situation and is having to adjust its strategy and approach given these unprecedented emergence levels and environmental conditions. The Insect Control Branch is committed to giving the community its best available and current information as it continues to adjust to these challenging conditions. The Branch will be communicating regularly as it learns new information relative to conditions and, accordingly, adjusts operational plans as needed.
Not since the mid-1990s has Winnipeg experienced environmental conditions conducive to this level of emergence. In 1994, Winnipeg received over 100 mm of rain over a three-week period, temperatures were very similar to those we are currently experiencing and trap counts reached almost 500.
With our current environmental conditions, the Adulticiding Factor Analysis (AFA) rating remains at High, based on the following factors: ·
- Soil conditions – Near saturation as a result of the recent rainfalls has created many standing water bodies throughout the City.
- Today’s average daily trap count is 558.
- The forecasted warmer conditions will be conducive for continued adult mosquito development.
- The current adult nuisance mosquito population continues to rapidly increase.
- Based on larval surveillance, another generation of nuisance adult mosquitoes is in the process of emerging.
Based on our on-going efforts to continually monitor and assess our surveillance data, we will continue with our plan for a broad adulticiding program for Winnipeg. The program will begin, weather permitting, on Thursday, July 14th, in the Charleswood, Tuxedo and West Kildonan areas, as planned.
At this time, the surveillance data indicates that fogging operations would then move to southeast Winnipeg. Notices will be issued on a daily basis, providing a minimum of eight hours advanced notification as to where fogging operations will specifically be occurring on that given day, weather permitting. Fogging will continue throughout the city based on surveillance data and AFA guidelines.
All buffer zones will be respected. Crews will ensure that the insecticide sprayer is turned off 100 meters on each side of a registered property on the front street, side street, and rear lane.
Residents are reminded that, if they wish to have their primary residence excluded from the adulticiding program, they can register their objections in writing to:
Insect Control Branch
3 Grey Street, Winnipeg, MB
R2L 1V2
Please allow up to three days for processing. In addition, the Insect Control Branch has implemented automated email and telephone notification systems. Once registered, residents will receive daily phone or email notification during any and all fogging for adult mosquito control.
- To register for the automated email notification system, citizens can go to winnipeg.ca/wpgmail.
- To register for the automated telephone notification system, citizens can call the Bugline at 311.
In accordance with Council’s intent, the Insect Control Branch is working to ensure that we deliver the most effective mosquito control program under these unusual conditions. Insect Control crews will be working around the clock (24/7) implementing aggressive larviciding, barrier treatment and residential fogging programs.
