48-Hour Public Notice: Adult Nuisance Mosquito Control (fogging) program begins in the city of Winnipeg starting Thursday, July 14, 2005 at 10:00 p.m., weather permitting
WINNIPEG - JULY 12, 2005 - Notice is hereby given that the City of Winnipeg will begin fogging to control adult nuisance mosquitoes, due to a high Adulticiding Factor Analysis (AFA) rating, based on the following factors:
- Soil conditions – Near saturation as a result of the recent rainfalls has created many standing water bodies throughout the City.
- The City is now collecting trap counts on a daily basis. The average daily trap
counts over the past four days are as follows:
- Saturday, July 9 – 74
- Sunday, July 10 – 162
- Monday, July 11 – 171
- Tuesday, July 12 - 259
- The forecasted warmer conditions will be conducive for continued adult mosquito development.
- The current adult nuisance mosquito population is increasing.
- Based on larval surveillance, another generation of nuisance adult mosquitoes is in
the process of emerging.
Weather permitting, the Insect Control Branch will commence a fogging program on Thursday, July 14 at 10:00 p.m. in the following residential areas: - West Kildonan – Area Boundaries: Main Street to the West, Red River to the East, Redwood Avenue to the South and Chief Peguis Trail to the North
- Charleswood/Tuxedo – Area Boundaries: The West Perimeter Highway to the
West, Kenaston Boulevard to the East, Wilkes Avenue to the South and Assiniboine
River to the North
The Insect Control Branch will also be fogging in the following City parks and cemeteries: Kildonan Park, Assiniboine Park, Crescent Drive Park, King’s Park, Maple Grove Park, St. Vital Park, St. Vital Cemetery and Brookside Cemetery. The City’s parks and cemeteries are being targeted to address the high number of mosquitoes in these areas, thereby protecting adjacent residential areas.
Fogging will then continue in targeted areas of the city, where the surveillance data shows that the conditions within these areas are favourable for an already high adult mosquito population to further increase. Information regarding which areas will be targeted for fogging will be released as soon as it becomes available.
Fogging will take place between the hours of 10:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. Notices of evening fogging activities will be emailed to the media daily by the Insect Control Branch. Fogging will not occur when temperatures are below 13º Celsius and/or wind speeds are greater than 15 km/h.
The insecticide Malathion for ultra low volume (ULV) applications will be used. This insecticide has been approved for use in Canada by Health Canada (PMRA – Pest Management Regulatory Agency). Malathion will be used in accordance with federallyapproved label directions by licensed pesticide applicators.
All buffer zones will be respected. Crews will ensure that the insecticide sprayer is turned off 100 meters on each side of a registered property on the front street, side street, and rear lane. Residents are reminded that, if they wish to have their primary residence excluded from the adulticiding program, they can register their objections in writing to the Insect Control Branch at 3 Grey Street, Winnipeg, MB, R2L 1V2. Please allow up to three days for processing.
In addition, the Insect Control Branch has implemented automated email and telephone notification systems. Once registered, residents will receive daily phone or email notification during any and all fogging for adult mosquito control. To register for the automated email notification system, citizens can go to http://winnipeg.ca/wpgmail. To register for the automated telephone notification system, citizens can call the Bugline at 311. The City’s extensive larviciding and barrier treatment programs will continue throughout the City in conjunction with the fogging program.
To find out where City crews will be fogging, citizens are encouraged to visit the Web site at http://winnipeg.ca/bugline or call the Bugline at 311 daily.
