| Safety precautions urged while river levels remain high
WINNIPEG - JULY 01, 2005 - High water levels and overland flooding this Canada Day weekend have prompted City of Winnipeg officials to urge Winnipeggers to take precautions and avoid unnecessary risks.
At City Hall today, Mayor Sam Katz said: “Let’s make this Canada Day weekend a safe one. Please exercise caution and stay away from fast-moving waters.
“City crews have been working around the clock to protect streets, property and lives.”
With debris and fast currents, boaters continue to be advised to stay off the rivers until levels drop significantly. They are particularly encouraged to avoid viewing Canada Day fireworks from boats on the river.
Fast-moving creeks and streams also pose a risk. People are strongly advised not to walk close to any creek, stream or ditch because of the danger of slipping and being carried away by the current.
Homeowners who live near retention ponds should watch for rising water levels and protect their property. To report any serious problems, property owners should call the emergency services number, 311.
Overland flooding has also posed some traffic concerns. Barricades have been erected in the vicinity of Bishop Grandin Boulevard and Lakewood Drive, restricting traffic.
Localized flooding is occurring on other streets throughout the city. Please watch for barricades, use caution and drive slowly through any water.
Sandbag crews are still working. To date, the City has delivered 20,000 bags to Scotia Street, Lyndale Drive and various selected properties where the river posed a threat. City staff went door-to-door on Scotia to advise property owners to start building dikes to protect their homes.
Sandbags are also being used to seal about 100 manhole covers to prevent floodwaters from entering the sewer system.
Some homeowners have already experienced basement flooding and now are having to clean up. For information on health precautions and cleanup methods, go to: http://www.wrha.mb.ca/howcare/mdesk/news011.php
