City launches comprehensive review of Winnipeg Zoning By-law
WINNIPEG - JUNE 23, 2005 - The City of Winnipeg’s Planning, Property and Development Department is undertaking another major project to improve the land development system in Winnipeg - a Comprehensive Review of the Winnipeg Zoning By-law 6400/94.
“This is a significant project for the City and is one that promises to have a long-lasting legacy,” said Councillor Peter De Smedt, Chair of the City’s Standing Policy Committees on Property & Development and Downtown Development. “In undertaking this review, we’re looking for innovative ideas for development standards that will act as an incentive to promote economic development, attract business and industry and facilitate the building of a world-class city. The new by-law will also be a tool to assist Council in making sound decisions about development in our city.”
The Zoning By-law is the foundation for managing development in the City. The purpose of the review is to update the Winnipeg Zoning By-law and make it more congruent with Plan Winnipeg and the City’s overall planning and development goals. Other objectives of the review include: developing regulations that provide more predictability and transparency, simplifying processes, improving customer service, accommodating more mixed uses and encouraging innovation.
Clarion Associates has been hired to conduct the comprehensive review of the Winnipeg Zoning By-law, and will lead a team that includes local consultants ND LEA, McCandless & Associates, and Royal LePage/Stevenson Advisors. The team will undertake a stakeholder consultation process and draft a new Zoning By-law and Zoning Maps for all the lands in the City of Winnipeg, outside the downtown area. The Downtown area is regulated by the Downtown Winnipeg Zoning By-law.
