Mayor Katz moves to step up speed enforcement, explore motor track
Asks province to expand use of photo radar

WINNIPEG - JUNE 10, 2005 - Committed to taking every possible step to create safe streets and assist the Winnipeg Police Service in their ongoing efforts to enforce the law, Mayor Sam Katz announced today that he will seek authority from the Provincial government to expand the use of photo enforcement technology to tackle excessive speeding and racing in areas around the City.

“The tragedy last weekend does not stand alone,” said Katz. “There have been other people killed and injured due to illegal street racers, and we must act to protect the safety of innocent people. We have the laws, but we need the tools to enforce it. Photo radar isn’t the only solution, but I believe it puts another deterrent in place, and when it comes to protecting the people of this city, I don’t think we can have enough. ”

In conjunction with these efforts, the Winnipeg Police Service will act to boost their presence on Winnipeg’s streets, particularly on Sunday nights.

“This isn’t about cruising. This isn’t about closing streets. This is about enforcing the law,” said Katz. “Speeding is illegal – period. The Winnipeg Police Service is doing its part, and I want to get them as many tools as possible to get the job done.”

Currently, provincial legislation provides for specific limitations on the deployment of red-light cameras and photo radar. Katz will seek amendments to allow for the use of the photo radar vans in areas the police identify as particularly high risk for racing and excessive speeding.

The Mayor also expressed interest in the idea of a private sector motor sport park that could provide a safe environment for true car enthusiasts to enjoy their vehicles.

“Research has shown that cities such as Calgary, Saskatoon and San Diego have been able to help address these problems with motor sport parks,” said Katz. “I want to see what the private sector can do to help us build a solution here in Winnipeg.
