City announces new Director of Transit

WINNIPEG - JUNE 06, 2005 - Today, Annitta L. Stenning, Chief Administrative Officer for the City of Winnipeg, announced that Dave Wardrop has been appointed the City’s new Director of Transit. Wardrop brings 18 years of experience with the City of Winnipeg, and a strong commitment to customer service, to his new position. He replaces Rick Borland, who retired in January, 2005.

“I’m very pleased to welcome Dave to our senior management team,” said Stenning. “His strong management record at the Water and Waste Department, his dedication to quality service, and his commitment to clear and effective communication with Councillors, citizens, and staff make him the manager we need. He is well equipped to ensure Winnipeg Transit is at the forefront of urban transportation service in Canada.”

Wardrop, a graduate of the University of Manitoba’s Bachelor’s and Master’s programs in civil engineering, in 2004 also received a Master of Business Administration degree from the U. of M.’s I. H. Asper School of Business, for which he received the Associates Award for the highest academic standing in the program. He has been employed by The City of Winnipeg’s Water and Waste Department since 1986, most recently as that department’s Field Service Operations Engineer. He has been responsible for overseeing 5,000 kilometres of wastewater infrastructure, and has played a leading role in the City’s flood control efforts.

Wardrop’s engineering expertise is complemented by extensive experience in the management of contractors, consultants, staff, and budgets. As Water and Waste’s Field Service Operations Engineer, he led ongoing consultations with both regulators and stakeholder groups, as well as a number of business improvement initiatives. “Dave has strong leadership skills, and I know that he will serve our community well,” said Stenning. She thanked Tony Dreolini, as well, for his capable management of the Transit Department as Acting Director.

Winnipeg Transit provides regular transit, handi-transit, chartered bus, and special events service to the citizens of Winnipeg, serving approximately 39 million riders per year.
