Mayor Katz congratulates Reg Alcock on appointment to federal cabinet

WINNIPEG - July 20, 2004 - Mayor Sam Katz today welcomed the appointment of Winnipeg South MP Reg Alcock to the Federal Cabinet as President of the Treasury Board and Minister responsible for the Canadian Wheat Board.

“Reg Alcock will provide Winnipeg with a strong voice at the cabinet table in Ottawa ,” said Katz. “I look forward to working constructively with him on a variety of important issues here in the City that require input and support from our federal government.”

Katz also welcomed the creation of a new cabinet position, Minister of State (Infrastructure and Communities), and hopes this appointment signals a commitment by the Prime Minister to meet his campaign commitment to redefine and significantly increase the funding support received by Canadian municipalities.

“It has been recognized by mayors across the country that cities face some unique funding challenges, and Winnipeg is no exception,” said Katz. “I believe Reg Alcock will work with the Prime Minister and the new government to deliver on the election promises that are important to the citizens of Winnipeg .”

During the recent federal election campaign, Prime Minister Paul Martin made several commitments to improve the financial situation of municipalities such as Winnipeg . Major planks included:

  • Involve municipal governments as partners in implementing Canada 's national agenda by formally including them, for example, in pre-budget consultations.
  • To deliver at least 5-cents-a-litre of existing federal gasoline tax revenue.

Katz also congratulated St. Boniface MP Raymond Simard on his appointment as P arliamentary Secretary to the Deputy Leader of the Government in the House of Commons and Minister responsible for Official Languages and Minister responsible for Democratic Reform.
