YMCA-YWCA of Winnipeg Awards the 2001 YMCA Peace Medal

WINNIPEG - November 20, 2001 – The City of Winnipeg Police and Fire Paramedic Services today were awarded the 2001 YMCA Peace Medal during an event held at City Hall.

“This award is truly a confirmation of the esteem in which both our Police and Fire Paramedic Services are held in the community” said Deputy Mayor Lillian Thomas. “Their contributions to the safety and well-being of all our citizens are outstanding.”

The YMCA Peace Medal is awarded annually to an individual or group in local communities who demonstrate in their lives and activities the values expressed in the World Alliance 1981 Peace Statement, which speaks to the responsibility of peace beginning with each and every one of us and more.

“This recognition of our Police and Fire Paramedic Services is truly an honour” said Gail Stephens, Chief Administrative Officer. “I believe that our emergency response personnel provide an exemplary level of service to the citizens of Winnipeg”.

“We strongly feel that the Winnipeg Police and Fire Paramedic Services have demonstrated through their work, educational programs, special projects and community initiatives, a commitment to peace and making our communities safer and healthier” said Chris Martin, Chair, Board of Directors, YMCA-YWCA of Winnipeg.

The announcement of the Peace Medal Award traditionally takes place during YMCA World Peace Week – this year it is November 18 – 24.
