Homicide – Arrest: C17-31797

On February 14, 2017, at approximately 1:55 a.m., Winnipeg Police responded to a report of a Weapon incident at the intersection of Dafoe Road West and Gillson Street.  The initial information received was that a City of Winnipeg Bus Operator had been assaulted by a lone passenger while he was stopped at the end of his route.

The initial officers on scene located the bus operator who was suffering from serious stab wounds. The victim, Irvine J. FRASER,  a 58-year-old male, was conveyed to hospital in critical condition, but has succumbed to his injuries.

Led by a canine unit, responding officers were able to locate a suspect on the frozen Red River between Freedman Crescent to the north and Marine Drive to the south. The male suspect was arrested and brought to the river bank. The 22-year-old male is currently in police custody.

The canine officer returned alone to the ice to continue the investigation at which time he fell through the ice. General Patrol officers were able to get a rope to the canine officer and pull him to safety. The officer was not injured.

This investigation is continuing by investigators from the Major Crimes Unit.
