Work is underway to have all City departments SAFE Work Certified

More City facilities receive SAFE Work certification

The number of City of Winnipeg workplaces that are SAFE Work Certified continues to grow. This past year, the Water and Waste Department’s Water Services Division, Solid Waste Division, South End Treatment Plant, and West End Treatment Plant received this important designation.

“The SAFE Work certification process is a significant and important undertaking for us,” said Kent Blackmon, Organizational Safety Services Manager.

The Community Services Department and Fleet Management Agency had already been SAFE Work Certified.  Blackmon said other departments and divisions are making significant progress in the process.

SAFE Work Certified is the standard for safety and health certification programs in Manitoba and is offered by industry based safety programs and associations. Certification programs are offered to help reduce workplace injuries and illnesses as well as promote a culture of safety in Manitoba.

The City’s commitment to the certification program began on the 2018 National Day of Mourning. The day, recognized annually on April 28, commemorates workers who have been injured or killed in the workplace as well as workers who have become ill as a result of their work. It is also a day to commit to eliminate workplace illness and injury.

With the COVID-19 pandemic, the ceremonies traditionally held on this day cannot take place in person this year. Instead, we are recognizing the day online and with the following video.
