Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to apartment fire on Smith Street

Released: February 2, 2023 at 5:55 p.m.

Winnipeg, MB – At 12:14 p.m. on Thursday, February 2, 2023, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to an automatic fire alarm in a 21-storey high-rise at 185 Smith St.

When crews arrived at the scene, they investigated and found thick black smoke coming from one of the suites. While most residents had self-evacuated from the floor, firefighters did a search to ensure no one was in danger. Some residents from other floors, who hadn’t already evacuated, were able to shelter-in-place as firefighters quickly brought the fire under control. No injuries were reported.

The building’s sprinkler system was activated by the fire. As a result, most fire damage was contained to the suite where the fire originated. Several other areas of the building sustained smoke and water damage.

Damage estimates are not available at this time. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
