Assault - Arrests: C23-19281

Released: January 25, 2023 at 3:54 p.m.

On January 24, 2023, at approximately 6:30 p.m., the Winnipeg Police Service responded to the area of Dakota Street and Paddington Road for the report of an intoxicated female assaulting passengers and the operator of a transit bus.

General Patrol members from the East District attended to the stopped bus at John Forsyth Road and Ashford Drive, with the operator and passengers standing outside. Officers entered and located two adult females inside the bus engaged in a fight. The suspects continued to engage in a physical altercation, and a Conductive Energy Weapon (Taser) was required during the incident.

Through their investigation, officers learned that one of the suspects boarded the bus in the area of St. Mary’s Road and Vivian Street and became verbally abusive and aggressive with several passengers. The suspect began to assault a 15-year-old female passenger; however, passengers intervened. The suspect also physically assaulted the 28-year-old transit operator during the incident. The operator stopped the bus at John Forsyth Road and Ashford Drive, where he and some of the passengers safely disembarked.

Investigators also learned the suspect and a female passenger remained on board and engaged in a verbal argument which escalated when the passenger physically assaulted the suspect. When officers boarded the bus, the passenger failed to comply with verbal directions to stop the assault, and officers deployed a Taser to place her under arrest safely.

No injuries were reported as a result of the incident.
