Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service

P.A.C.E.R. (Paramedics Active in Community Education and Response)

Since its inception in 2002, the PACER program has provided specially outfitted and equipped paramedics deployed on bicycles. All of their medical equipment is carried on the bicycles. They are deployed by the Superintendent of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) when operationally feasible during the summer months.

Duties of the PACER unit include:
  • Patrol parks, bicycle paths, and other public events in the downtown area:
    • As a public education resource, promote a healthy lifestyle of exercise and safety to the public.
    • Responding to incidents to assess, stabilize, and treat the patient until an ambulance arrives for transport.
  • Provide EMS coverage at any large crowd event (as determined by the Superintendent of EMS) as they are very maneuverable and highly visible to people seeking medical assistance.
  • Provide safety information (including children's activity books) at WFPS events.
