Main Street Project (MSP)

main Street Project

The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service Community Paramedics have been providing on-site medical coverage 24x7 at the Main Street Project since 2011 after undergoing a 2 ½ year pilot project. The initial goal of this program was to provide medical clearance for every individual being detained under the Intoxicated Person Detention Act to ensure patient safety. The role and scope of these Paramedics have quickly expanded based on identified needs. There has been over 50% reduction in ambulance transport from the Main Street Project since the introduction of Paramedics. This Community Paramedic Program has been recognized at the national level by winning multiple awards of excellence. Amongst many other services, Community Paramedics in this program now provide:

  • Primary and emergency care to over 14,000 patients yearly
  • Point of care testing for HIV with immediate test results
  • Advanced wound care
  • Health promotion and risk reduction
  • Direct referrals to other programs and services as required
  • Coordinated care with other health care professionals through the use of a shared Electronic Medical Record for documentation
