Winnipeg Committee for Safety

Winnipeg Committee for Safety

Downtown Winnipeg at night

Comprising volunteer citizen members who offer diverse and passionate perspectives, The Winnipeg Committee for Safety (WCFS) is mandated to advise the Mayor and Council on safety issues as they impact City of Winnipeg policies, procedures and services. The WCFS’ ongoing role is to provide information, formulate recommendations and monitor progress regarding safety issues within our communities. The Committee meets monthly and reports to the Executive Policy Committee.

The WCFS works with citizens and local organizations to make Winnipeg a safe and healthy city. Since 1999, the Committee has brought people together from across the city to brainstorm ideas, share information, set priorities, build networks among residents and agencies and empower residents to take action in their own neighbourhoods.

Our mandate is to support, assist, stimulate and mobilize the community. We aim to stay ahead of the curve and lead community initiatives proactively and with forward thinking.

Mandate

Support - We aim to empower local organizations that wish to make our communities safer and healthier for all. Through meaningful engagement, the WCFS strives to be a conduit between the community and City Council. We may also offer in-kind support for organizations seeking the funding necessary to carry out their important and impactful work.

Assist - Through information sharing and network building, we seek to solidify our position as Winnipeg’s knowledge hub on a variety of safety concerns and approaches while promoting community capacity and a culture of safety.

Stimulate - By being aware of best practices utilized in municipalities across Canada and internationally, we stimulate our own communities with pro-active safety approaches.

Mobilize - Through connecting various stakeholders and developing a strong network of community action, we aim to mobilize and empower neighbourhoods and community groups across Winnipeg.

Our Vision and Mission

The WCFS believes that safety is a fundamental human right. Safe communities begin with a shared goal of capacity building, derived from working together towards common objectives. We promote and increase the safety of our city and our citizens by providing support, education and collaborative goals to help make our city safer.

Our mission is to work proactively to maintain and improve the safety of each of our citizens for the advancement of community well-being.
