Holiday operating hours for civic facilities

WINNIPEG - December 22, 2006

Civic offices will close at noon on Friday, December 22, 2006 and re-open on Wednesday, December 27, 2006. Civic offices will also be closed on Monday, January 1, 2007.


City Libraries will be closed Sunday, December 24, through Tuesday, December 26. Most will re-open Wednesday, December 27. Please note - some branches will be closed on Wednesday, December 27 as per their regular day of closure. Citizens are encouraged to contact their local library for specific information regarding holiday hours.
Libraries will be closed on Monday, January 1, 2007.


The Zoo will remain open throughout the holiday season from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. daily, with the exception of Christmas Day, when the Zoo will be open from 12:00 noon to 4:00 p.m.


The Conservatory remains open throughout the holiday season from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. daily.


Holiday hours are in effect for all pools through January 7, 2007. Citizens are encouraged to call their local pool for more detailed information on holiday operating hours. Phone numbers can be found on page 54 of the Winter Leisure Guide or by visiting our website at
Pools will remain open until 12:00 noon on Christmas Eve, Sunday, December 24, with the exception of St. James Civic Centre, St.James-Assiniboia Centennial, Elmwood-Kildonan and Transcona Pools which will be closed on Sunday, December 24.
Pools will re-open on Wednesday, December 27 and remain open on holiday hours until 4:00 p.m. on New Year's Eve, Sunday, December 31.
Pools will be closed on New Year's Day Monday, January 1, 2007.

Leisure Centres

Leisure Centres will be closed on Sunday, December 24 except Fort Rouge Leisure Centre (open 8:30 a.m.- 3:30 p.m.), Magnus Eliason Recreation Centre (open 10:00 a.m.- 2:00 p.m.) and Freight House Leisure Centre (open 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m.).
Leisure Centres will re-open on Wednesday, December 27 and remain open through Sunday, December 31.
Leisure Centres are closed Monday, January 1, 2007.

Skating Rinks

Park skating rinks and toboggan slides remain open throughout the holiday season between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. (weather permitting).
Citizens are encouraged to visit for additional details on location amenities.

Animal Services

The Animal Services Agency will be open on Sunday, December 24 from 12 noon to 3:30 p.m.
The Agency will then re-open from Wednesday, December 27 to Friday, December 29 between 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. and on Saturday, December 30 and Sunday, December 31 from 12:00 noon to 5:00 p.m.
The Agency will be closed on New Year's Day, Monday, January 1, 2007.

Winnipeg Transit

Transit will be operating on a Sunday schedule on:

  • December 25
  • December 26
  • January 1
From December 27 to December 29, Winnipeg Transit will operate on a regular weekday schedule with service adjustments on the following routes:
  • 21 Portage Express (reduced service)
  • 25 Ness Super Express (cancelled)
  • 41 Henderson Express (cancelled)
  • 46 Transcona Express (cancelled)

The Recycling/Garbage collection holiday schedule is as follows:

The only changes to the regular hours of operation at the Brady Road Landfill during the holidays are:

Sunday, December 24 9:00 am — 3:00 pm
Monday, December 25 Closed Christmas Day
Monday, January 1 Closed New Year's Day

You can recycle:

  • Christmas cards
  • Cardboard boxes (flattened)
  • Plastic packaging with a recycling triangle
  • Christmas trees — drop your tree off at any of the nine Let's Chip In Depots from December 27 to January 20. For more information on the depot locations, call 784-9000, Code 9813.

Holiday materials that are NOT recyclable:

  • Christmas wrap and ribbon
  • Foam packaging
  • Plastic packaging without a recycling triangle

Winnipeg Parking Authority

Parking meters are FREE on Monday, December 25, Tuesday, December 26, and again on January 1, 2007.

The Parking Store closes on Friday, December. 22 at 12:00 noon and will re-open on Wednesday, December 27.

The Parking Store will be closed on New Year's Day, Monday, January 1, 2007.Parking tickets may be paid by phone 985-2886 or online at


The Winnipeg Police Service River Patrol Section would like to remind the public that thin ice is present on our rivers and retention ponds. This is an extremely dangerous time as open water on the rivers is swift and very cold.

River Patrol Section members will be placing "DANGER-THIN ICE" signs around all outfalls, retention ponds and any other potentially dangerous areas within the City of Winnipeg.
