City Hall Christmas Tree Donation
Each year, the City of Winnipeg Public Works Department installs and lights up a large spruce tree for the holiday season in front of City Hall at the corner of Main St. and Market Ave. The City asks property owners who have a large spruce tree that has outgrown their property and is being considered for removal to consider donating their tree for City Hall's annual Christmas tree display.
It takes a 32,000 kg crane and a flatbed to remove and transport the tree from the owner's yard to City Hall.
The width of the tree can be 9 metres (30 feet) across, so to meet the required height restrictions for road travel, the tree is tied down to approximately 4.5 metres (14 feet) in height.
By the time the tree is decorated, it can weigh as much as 1,800 kg or 4,000 pounds.
Strands of approximately 9,000 LED bulbs are attached onto the tree by hand. Lights run the length of each branch and are fastened with plastic ties.
To be considered for the City Hall Christmas tree, a spruce tree must meet the following criteria:
- located in the front yard of a property with direct access to the tree
- 12 to 15 metres tall (approximately 40 to 50 feet)
- fully symmetrical with a single trunk and no brown needles
Urban Forestry Branch staff select the tree that best meets the identified criteria.
The selected tree donor does not receive compensation for the tree. Urban Forestry Branch staff remove the tree, clean up the debris, and remove the stump to approximately two inches below ground level.
