Highlights of the environmental policy commitments

We will:

  • understand and respect citizen values,
  • remain up-to-date in technology and management practices,
  • all share responsibility for the environment,
  • meet or exceed regulatory requirements and
  • always seek to improve our environmental performance.

The City of Winnipeg Water and Waste Department, Water Pollution Control Centres, wastewater collection and land drainage systems aim to achieve excellence in environmental services, prevention of pollution and protection of public health and achieve this through a commitment to continual improvement of wastewater and land drainage service performance.

We are committed to:

  1. Understanding and respecting the views of citizens
    We will understand and respect differing community values, aspirations and priorities, both within our city and of downstream users and communities, in planning and undertaking our activities.
  2. Maintaining currency with advancing technology and management practice
    We will maintain technological currency and stay abreast of the evolution of management practice to ensure the most appropriate technologies and management practices are used in our facilities.
  3. Ensuring awareness, training and commitment of all staff
    We will provide all staff with appropriate information and training to enable them to conduct their work in an environmentally responsible manner and to play a full role in continual improvement.
  4. Meeting and exceeding expectations
    We will manage responsibly all aspects of our business to ensure compliance with legislative requirements and our own standards. We will strive to exceed regulatory requirements unless such an approach is shown not to be practical or cost effective.
  5. Practising continual improvement
    We will set challenging goals to prevent and mitigate impacts on our natural waterways, our soils and air. These goals are set annually through the use of the risk management framework and implemented and managed through our business planning and performance monitoring processes.
