Manual garbage collection day pick-up tips

  • Put your garbage out by 7 a.m. on your collection day.
  • Put your garbage at the curb or lane in a spot that is easy for the collectors to see and reach.
  • Each filled garbage can or bag should be light enough to carry easily with one hand to the curb or lane.

  • Do not overfill garbage bags with heavy material, such as chunks of sod or wet grass.
  • Leave 15 to 20 centimetres (6 to 8 inches) of bag above the twist tie so that the collectors can get a firm hold on the bag.
  • Clear a path through to your collection area. Shovel any ice and snow so that collectors can see and get to your garbage and recyclable materials.

  • On collection day, leave some space between your recyclables and your garbage. This helps both the recycling and garbage operators identify what they should collect at your home.
  • Keep parked vehicles away from your collection area on collection day.
  • Do not put bags and cans on top of snow banks, as the constant lifting above shoulder level can injure collection crews.
  • Check your trees each spring, as overhanging branches cause a hazard to large vehicles travelling in the lanes. Residents are responsible for trimming their overhanging trees.
  • Bundle brush or tree trimmings together as long as branches are less than 100 millimetres (4 inches) in diameter, cut and tied into lengths no longer than one metre (39 inches) and weighing no more than 34 kilograms (75 pounds).
  • Bag and tie all grass clippings and yard waste – or better still, try grasscycling or composting them.
  • You can recycle your bagged yard waste free of charge by dropping it off at any seasonal leaf it with us depot.
  • Loose or bagged yard waste can be dropped off free of charge year-round at Brady Road Landfill.
  • In the Northwest area with automated cart collection, yard waste can be set out during the leaf it with us bi-weekly curbside collection program in May and October.
  • If you use grocery bags or other small kitchen-sized bags for your garbage, put them in larger sealed garbage bags or cans.
  • Load garbage cans loosely. Items jammed or wedged tightly into cans, such as boxes and branches, can make the cans difficult to empty, and may damage them.
  • Put small amounts of pet waste in tightly sealed bags together with household garbage. We will not collect garbage bags full of pet waste.
  • Place all loose garbage, such as sawdust, ashes and vacuum contents, in sealed bags. Loose garbage can blow out of the truck into the collectors' eyes and litter neighbourhoods.

  • Put all sharp objects, such as needles, broken glass, and nails, in puncture-proof containers.
  • Do not put out bulky waste for regular garbage collection.
  • If your collection day has passed and your garbage has not been collected, check for a tag. Tags explain why items were left behind. If there is no tag, and if you put your garbage out before 7:00 a.m., leave your garbage out and contact 311.
