Garbage collection

Who provides the garbage bins?

Property owners must obtain front-load bins. There are businesses listed under “Garbage” in your MTS Yellow Pages Phone Book that may sell or rent bins.

Where do I place the garbage bins?

In order to receive service, you must place the front-loading bins:

  • on your property,
  • in a place that our truck can access it, and
  • where our truck can safely enter and exit your property.

If the collection truck cannot access your bin because of vehicles, furniture, or other items blocking it, the truck will not return until your next scheduled collection day. If you have difficulty identifying a place for your bin, call 311 and one of our service representatives can assist you.

What happens if there isn’t enough room for the truck to access front-load containers?

We provide a pull-box service for properties where the truck cannot access the bin from the front for $19.00 per bin, per collection.

How often do you empty the garbage containers?

We empty the garbage bins once or twice every week, on a set day of the week. Your collection day may shift on weeks with holidays.

Can I lock or secure my metal garbage bin?

Yes. To ensure that others do not use the service you are paying for, you may consider placing lids and locks on the containers. If you lock the containers, be sure to unlock them before 7:00 a.m. on collection day. We provide an unlocking service for $35.00 per bin per month.

What size garbage bin does my property need?

Our standard level of collection service for multi-family homes is 100 litres of garbage per unit each week. One of our service representatives will help you determine the appropriate container size, and where to place it.

The following table shows the recommended bin size for once-a-week collection. You can request biweekly or twice-a-week collection.
