Garbage cans and stands
- Put your garbage in tightly sealed plastic garbage bags.
- If you use grocery bags or other kitchen-sized bags for your garbage, put them in larger sealed bags or cans.
- Putting only bags out for collection will save you and the collection crew the extra steps needed to return empty containers to the pick up point.
- If you use garbage cans, remove the lids before placing the cans out for collection.
- Keep the lids in a safe place until the cans have been emptied.
- Lids and empty containers can become a traffic hazard or become lost or damaged, especially on windy days.
- The best container for your garbage is a good quality green, black or orange garbage bag.
- You can also use galvanized metal or good quality plastic garbage containers less than 121 litres in size.
- We will not empty pails, drums and washtubs filled with garbage - these are not acceptable containers.
- If your garbage is picked up from the back lane, you may wish to build a stand for your containers.
- A stand must face the lane and not have lids or doors.
- The platform should be less than 45 centimetres (18 inches) above the ground.
- An easily detachable chain may help to prevent the containers from being toppled.
- Tie the lids to the stand, not to the can.
