Trash and ecologically significant areas don't mix. Dumping of garden waste or household trash into natural areas creates an ugly mess and does serious harm to the plants and animals living in these areas. Natural areas may seem like a logical place to put garden waste and grass clippings but in reality it is quite harmful. Dumping suffocates native plant species and introduces large amounts of weed seeds into the natural area.
Reclaiming ecologically significant areas from what was once a trash heap is
some of the positive work that is being undertaken. Old landfills along the
Seine river and in Assiniboine forest are being transformed into natural gems.
Trash has been removed and planting activities to restore damaged areas will
help to create valuable nature areas for the future. |
