The area in the southeast corner of Assiniboine Forest at Wilkes Ave and Shaftesbury Blvd formerly consisted of two small landfill sites that were decommissioned in the 1970s.  The landfills were capped off with clay fill, but over time settling of the clay occurred, exposing garbage and debris and creating sink holes.

To improve the aesthetics of the site and make it safe for public use, clay soil was brought in and leveled off in 2001.  Over the next two years, pre-plant weed control and site preparation occurred, followed by the seeding of native grassland species in 2004.  At present, the site is a lush grassland spanning 3.25 hectares in size.  With a new bench located on the south side of the grassland along the Harte Trail, it is the perfect place to sit and enjoy nature.
