Many areas in the South section of the Forest had experienced problems with flooding and standing water, in some cases causing trees to drown. On the east side near Shaftesbury Blvd, almost and an acre of trees had been lost because of permanent flooding.

Implemented in 2005, the Assiniboine Forest Drainage and Wetland Enhancement Project was developed to alleviate drainage problems and create a second wetland in Assiniboine Forest.  In addition to improving drainage, the new wetland has increased the habitat diversity of the forest, which has in turned increased the species diversity.
