A medium sized (to 60 cm) plant with upright flower stalks bearing large showy flowers. Prized for its medicinal values by native North American cultures and by modern herbalists. Blooms in July. A must for butterfly gardens. Prefers sandy soils. Seeds should be stratified. Plants can flower in their second growing season, but usually require three years to become large enough to bloom.
