Assiniboine ForestFor the budding naturalist, Assiniboine Forest offers a good example of aspen-oak vegetation, which is the home of a great variety of birds, animals, and even some rare plants.

700 acres of forest, marsh, and wild life...preserved for you to enjoy without having to leave Winnipeg.

It is unusual to find a forest within a city, but Winnipeg has one, complete with a herd of white tailed deer. This unique park is Assiniboine Forest Park located between Chalfont Avenue and Shaftesbury Boulevard. Situated close to a bus route, Assiniboine Forest offers a quiet place to escape the city in order to relax and enjoy nature.

For the budding naturist, Assiniboine Forest offers a good example of aspen-oak vegetation, which is the home of a great variety of birds, animals, and even some rare plants.

For those who like to hike, an all weather nature trail leads from the corner of Chalfont and Grant to the Eve Werier Memorial Pond in the middle of the forest. An observation area overlooks the pond - a perfect place to watch for shorebirds and waterfowl. If you're lucky, you may even see a white-tailed deer venture down to the water's edge to drink.

Assiniboine Forest offers a wilderness within a city. Walk down one of the trails and see how quickly the city disappears.

Naturalist guided hikes and talks on the Assiniboine Forest are available to groups on a reservation basis.

Little Mountain ParkDuring the summer the park is covered with many colorful wildflowers. If you like to mix nature study and history with pure fun, there are large playing fields for any sports activity. The park contains a large section of aspen forest with a mosaic of hiking and corss country skiing trails. Owls, foxes, ground squirrels, and an occasional deer are but a sample of the wildlife which can be seen.

Set aside as a park in 1965, Little Mountain is significant both as a natural area and for its historical background.Little Mountain Park provides 160 acres of woodland and open space only a short distance from downtown Winnipeg.

Much of the park is located on a limestone ridge with the bedrock very near the surface. This fact led to the development of one of Winnipeg's first limestone quarries on site in 1896. Remnants of the abandoned quarry can still be seen. In fact, one of the old quarry pits now is a scenic pond surrounded by a picnic site.

The park also contains a large section of aspen forest with a mosaic of hiking and cross country skiing trails. Owls, foxes, ground squirrels, and an occasional deer are but a sample of the wildlife which can sometimes be seen.

Living Prairie MuseumAn example of original unploughed tall grass prairie containing approximately 151 native plant species. The Living Prairie Museum is a 12 hectare (30acre) tall grass prairie preserve located inside the City of Winnipeg. Prior to European settlement, tall grass prairie covered one million square kilometers in central North America, stretching from Texas to southern Manitoba. Today, tall grass prairie is all but gone. In Manitoba only 1/20th of 1% of the original tall grass prairie remains. The Living Prairie Museum is one of the few remaining fragments of this once vast ecosystem.
