The City of Winnipeg plans to widen and rehabilitate McGillivray Boulevard into a continuous fourlane divided roadway, from Waverley Street to 300m west of Columbia Drive. It is anticipated that construction of this section of McGillivray Boulevard will reduce area traffic congestion and improve safety, especially at the intersection of McGillivray Boulevard and Kenaston Boulevard.
The Phase 1 contract from Kenaston Boulevard to Waverly Street has been awarded to Bituminex Limited. Work began on August 6, 2008. During the remaining 2008 construction season work will concentrate on building the new westbound lanes. Traffic will be maintained on the existing lanes.
- McGillivray Blvd. (Route 155) is a major transportation corridor in the southwest region of Winnipeg that connects Pembina Hwy. to the Perimeter Hwy. and continues outside of the City (southwest) as PTH #3
- McGillivray Blvd. serves a mix of residential, commercial and industrial land uses
- McGillivray Blvd. currently carries 18,000 to 20,000 vehicles per day within the Study Area (Source: 2006 City of Winnipeg Traffic Flow Map). This traffic volume warrants a four-lane divided roadway
- The total length of the McGillivray Blvd. widening/rehabilitation project is approximately 2.5km (from Waverley St. to 300m west of Columbia Dr.)
- Within the project limits there are four signalized intersections, numerous private approaches and one new intersection at Linden Ridge Dr.
- Project includes intersection improvements, pedestrian and bicycle paths/connections and landscaping
Why is McGillivray Boulevard being widened?
Reasons for widening McGillivray Boulevard relate directly to improving safety, improving traffic operations and reducing through traffic on local neighbourhood streets.
Safety Issues
- In 2005 the McGillivray/Kenaston intersection had the City’s highest collision frequency: 54 collisions resulting in 6 injuries and one fatality; there has also been one collision involving a school bus
- Northbound vehicles make illegal left turns through the depressed median in advance of McGillivray/Kenaston intersection
- The City has installed a red light camera to reduce speeding and red light running for northbound traffic along Kenaston Blvd.
Traffic Operations Issues
- Westbound and eastbound traffic is often delayed several signal cycles at the McGillivray/Kenaston intersection as there is only one through lane in each direction and the traffic in the left turn lanes blocks the through lanes
Neighbourhood Through Traffic Issues
- Some area traffic is using Columbia Blvd. through Whyte Ridge to avoid the delays in making northbound left turns at the McGillivray/Kenaston intersection
The project includes the development of a multi-use (pedestrian and cyclist) path, as well as
landscaping/rehabilitation within the project area. The multi-use path will address the integration
of the corridor into the regional bicycle and pedestrian movement system, including:
- Connections to existing pedestrian and bicycle destinations, including Linden Woods,
Linden Ridge, Whyte Ridge, as well as the McGillivray Blvd. and Kenaston Blvd.
commercial areas
- Designing the Multi-use path to accommodate an extension to Pembina Hwy.
