Crews planting tree on boulevard

Tree Planting

The City of Winnipeg, Urban Forestry Branch tree planting program objectives;
  • To replace losses, or anticipated losses, of elms to Dutch Elm Disease (D.E.D.), or other tree species for other reasons
  • To provide/maintain an overall diverse tree canopy by planting trees where there are gaps in the existing urban forest.
Tree planting location priorities: All tree planting requests submitted to the Urban Forestry Branch are inspected to ensure that a tree is warranted at that location. Considerations are:
  • Residential streets
  • Regional boulevards
  • Parks
  • Existing trees in the suggested location
  • Proximity to above ground structures
  • Development agreement status
  • Underground structures (clearances)
Urban Forestry Branch is not responsible for the following tree planting:
  • Private property
  • New development where tree was planted within the last two years
  • Dutch Elm Disease removal on private property

Tree Planting Timelines:

  • One (1) or two (2) years relative to the date the tree request was accepted and the tree installation date.
  • Time delay is due to the large volume of trees required and the operational limitations of the Urban Forestry Branch.
Tree Planting Options (hiring a private contractor):

If a tree was planted on your boulevard you will receive a Planting NoticeClick on sample notice for better view
