City Hall Christmas Tree

  • Interested members of the community can offer to donate a tree by calling 311
(The 2011 tree has been chosen, thank you to all who have offered up their tree)
  • Forestry Branch staff select the tree that best meets the identified criteria
  • The tree must be a 12–15 m tall fully symmetrical spruce with a single trunk and easily accessible in the front yard of the home owner so that forestry staff can decorate the top half of the tree on site.
  • Forestry crews remove the tree, clean up the debris, and remove the stump to approximately 2 inches below ground level.

Little known facts about the City Hall Christmas Tree

The tree is placed in front of City Hall at the corner of Main St. and Market Ave .

It takes a 32,000 kg crane and a flatbed to remove and transport the tree from the owner's yard to City Hall.

The width of the tree is usually 9 meters (30 feet) across, so to meet the required height restrictions for road travel the tree is tied down to only 3 meters.

By the time the tree is decorated, it can weigh as much as 1,800 kg or 4,000 pounds.

The 11,000 LED bulbs on the tree are attached by hand. Lights run the length of each branch, fastened with plastic ties.
