Brookside Field of Honour
Continuous-Beam Foundation
and Military Monument
Refurbishment Program
The City of Winnipeg’s Cemeteries Branch in partnership with Veterans Affairs Canada, Canada Remembers Division is commencing a refurbishment program to replace the continuous-beam foundations in the Brookside Cemetery Field of Honour.
The program will commence in the North-west Corner, Block 2 of the Field of Honour on Monday April 26th 2009 and will continue into adjacent blocks (weather and ground conditions permitting) on a rolling program of work.
The refurbishment program will require the removal of all existing military monuments for maintenance and cleaning. The military monuments will be reinstalled in the new continuous-beam foundations prior to the end of the Fall season.
There will be disruptions while work is underway and some military monuments will not be able to be visited for periods of time but wherever possible these will be kept to a minimum.
The refurbishment program will take several years to complete and will require several sections of the Field of Honour to be inaccessible for differing periods of time, while the work is safely completed.
We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause visitors to the cemetery and Field of Honour.
If you have a relative interred in the Field of Honour and would like further information about this refurbishment program or are planning a visit, please contact the Brookside Cemetery Office or visit the Cemeteries Branch website for further information and prior to travelling.
Brookside Cemetery Field of Honour; is the second largest military interment site in Canada and the largest municipally managed military field of honour, with over 11,000 veterans interred. It is regarded by many as a unique Canadian field of honour because of its appearance; the creek flowing through it, the design that incorporates the use of continuous-beam foundations used to support the military monuments in straight even sighted rows and the significant number of interments
