Who We Are and What We Offer

The Municipal Cemeteries Branch operates under the Planning, Property and Development Department. We provide dignified interment services and maintain the three City-owned cemeteries: Brookside, St. Vital and Transcona.
We offer a range of prices to ensure that everyone can afford a dignified interment. Our services include:
- Traditional and cremated remains interment (burial)
- Memorialization options, including plaques, benches, tree donations, etc.
- Perpetual maintenance of all cemetery grounds
We are available to assist you in pre-planning or in making arrangements at the time of need. You control and choose the essential elements of interment services including:
- Selection of a funeral home or chapel
- Selection of a memorial dealer

Our History
The Cemeteries Branch has provided interment services since 1878, beginning with the opening of Brookside Cemetery, home to Canada’s oldest and largest Military Field of Honour.
The St. Vital and Transcona Cemeteries were opened by their respective municipalities, and operation of the two cemeteries was transferred to the Cemeteries Branch with the unicity merger in 1978.
Our vision is to be ‘The Citizen’s first choice provider of interment services in Winnipeg’. Which we achieve by providing “an affordable, high quality, caring community service that ensures access to and choice of services for all”.
Perpetual Maintenance Reserve Fund
Perpetual maintenance of the grounds, lots/plots, niches and cremation gardens is assured to all owners. We invest a percentage of the purchase price of all cemetery property in the Perpetual Maintenance Reserve Fund to ensure funds will always be available to maintain all 3 cemeteries.
Note: Perpetual maintenance does not provide for the upkeep of memorials placed in the cemetery grounds.
Pre-Planning
In addition to affordable prices, we also allow for the purchase of a new interment property to be made interest free over a period of up to one year.
Note: No interment or inurnment may take place until the account has been paid in full.
