Mayor Presents Business Improvement Zones Awards

Transcona B.I.Z.

Transcona BIZ award

From the Transcona BIZ the award recipient of the Mayor’s BIZ Award is Don Toyne.

In 1976 at the age of 26 years old, Don owned the first Pic-a-Pop franchise in Winnipeg at 701 Regent Ave West, in the BIZ Zone.  In 1977, Don was asked to join the Pic-a-Pop management team and after a very short time was promoted to General Manager where he ran the company for 10 years.

In 1980, Don recognized the great work of the Newman’s Own Foundation; thanks to Don’s efforts, the products are now in Canada and the funds benefits a Canadian Foundation.

Don was a founding member of the Transcona Springfield Education Foundation which to date has raised over $750,000.00 for Transcona and area students.

In 2005, the opportunity was presented to build a Subway Restaurant in Downtown Transcona.   With an investment of $250,000.00, Don and his wife, Nancy, decided to build the Subway store and become more involved in the long term redevelopment and revitalization of Downtown Transcona.

Don is a long time Transcona BIZ member and annually supports the Transcona Hi Neighbour Festival.  Don’s dedication, commitment and loyalty to the Transcona business community and residents are very evident to all.

The Transcona BIZ is proud to have Don as part of the BIZ membership.  Don’s quiet and unassuming nature is a great contrast to his enormous success as a businessman.   His pure and genuine concern for those in his community and beyond is an example to us all.

Congratulations Don !!
