Old St. Vital B.I.Z.
The Mayor’s BIZ award recipient from the Old St Vital BIZ is Bob Holliday.
Since becoming president of the St. Vital Historical Society in 2008, Bob has spearheaded the move to set up a museum in the former police station and magistrate’s court located in historic St. Vital Fire Hall, 600 St. Mary’s Road, located within the Old St Vital BIZ Zone.
In the past 18 months, Bob has donated about 30 hours a week to bring the museum to fruition, whether he was building or using his Photoshop skills to put together the news letter.
Bob’s tireless enthusiasm has attracted numerous volunteers, to the historical society and the museum.
Bob began volunteering in 1959 when he became secretary of the teen and the adult executives at Glenlee Community Centre, and booked bands for the Friday night teen dances. He was one of the first people to hire Al and the Silvertones (Guess Who) and Neil Young and the Squires. He was also forced to cut short the Squires’ set upon threat of physical harm from teenage patrons.
Always interested in the business side of sports, Bob handled the statistics and publicity jobs for the St. Vital Bulldogs, Canadian senior football champions in 1968 and 1969.
He became vice president of the Manitoba Juvenile Football League in 1970,
In1973, he was a founding member of the Manitoba Junior Football Conference, and the founding chairman of the St. Vital Minor Hockey Association.
